Rain And The Asian Drama Craze

Going back to asrama on Sunday was never an exciting thing. But now, I can't wait to go back, even asked my parents to send me back before 4.00pm. And the only reason I'm so eager to go back was to watch Rain as Young-jae. He not only managed to steal my heart but almost 50% of the girls in our school.

Before 5pm the small TV room will be crowded with girls from Form 1 to Form 5 excitedly waiting for Full House (2004) to start. Even before the drama starts, we will be talking about Young-jae, how silly and frustrating Ji-eun and how swoon-worthy Yoo Min-hyuk is.

The TV room will be so silent when the drama starts. Everyone will hold their breath when they confess, laughter fills the over crowded room when Young-jae makes a silly act to make Ji-eun smile, everyone sings and acts along when Ji-eun sings the bear song, some will cover their eyes when they are about to kiss, red-faced.

Back then, Sunday was most anticipated because of Rain. Those were the good old days and it shows one of the early k-drama craze in Malaysia among school kids.

Since then, Asian dramas were widely accepted not only by the Chinese but also the Malay. Asian dramas including Taiwanese dramas like It Started With A Kiss @ ISWAK, Hanazakarino Kimitachihe, Devil Beside You, Brown Sugar Macchiato, Sassy Girl Chunhyang, Love Story In Harvard, Princess Hour, My Girl etc start to be shown regularly on television.

Some of the dramas were dubbed to Mandarin but most of it remains in the original voice but with subtitles.
Loving someone is tiring and it hurts, but it’s not something I can stop. – Young Jae
As the internet was not widely available back then the craziness was still not that bad. The most ‘hardcore’ one probably buy the DVD (yup, CD and DVD still available back then), print Rain picture and stuck it to their file or table, memorize the lyric to drama OST, memorize the dance to Three Bear song, I say not that bad at all.

But what Full House was able to do was open up most people's mind about Asian drama, thus opening the door for more drama to be brought in mostly through the NTV7 channel.

It also makes some of us eager to learn other foreign languages. Just because we can't wait for the show to be dubbed or waiting for the subtitle to be available.

As for the genre, most of them are romantic comedy with young adults or students as the main character. The storyline is not that heavy, rather light but brings joy to us. Every trial the character face seems like a huge, important life lesson for us.

Classic Korean, Taiwan, Asian drama back then will look so shabby and loose compared to nowadays drama in year 2020 where they talk about social issues, dark comedy etc. Still, if given a chance to rewatch all those classic drama, I do it again.

I never managed to watch the drama till the end (sometimes i just don't want the drama to end) but it remains as one of the happiest and memorable moments during my high school adventure. So thank you Rain for making my boarding school time a good memory and introducing me to the wonderful world of Asian drama.

Whats your favorite classic Asian drama?
